Legislative Update

The legislative session saw the proposal of several harmful bills, but none were enacted into law (yet). Key areas such as open enrollment, tax credit vouchers, school funding, teacher salaries, virtual schools, student assessments and accreditation did not see any new legislation. Bills that aimed to introduce additional classes such as civics and cursive, incentives for teachers’ exemplary achievements and the “don’t say gay” bill also failed to pass. The final budget is expected to fully fund the state formula that and financial support for student transportation. The House proposed budgets that would have defunded libraries and educational expenses related to diversity, equity and inclusion in both k-12 and higher education settings. However, these provisions were excluded from the final budget. It is crucial that we remain vigilant and proactive to ensure a quality public education for all students.
